House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ordered the removals. ‘There is no room in the hallowed halls of Congress or in any place of honor for memorializing men who embody the violent bigotry and grotesque racism of the Confederacy,’ Speaker Pelosi wrote in a letter to the clerk of the House of Representatives, who was on-site to supervise the removal of the portraits of Robert Hunter, Howell Cobb, James Orr, and Charles Crispon Thursday afternoon.
