Housing minister pressured to resign over £1bn property deal

Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick “insisted” a planning decision for a £1bn property development should be rushed through so a Tory donor’s company could avoid paying up to £50m in tax.

He has faced accusations of “cash for favours” after it emerged Richard Desmond had given the Conservative party £12,000 two weeks after the scheme for 1,500 homes in London was approved.

Among the correspondence released by the government is a text in which Mr Desmond urges the minister to back the deal so “Marxists don’t get the doe”.
